Introduction to Law is a general book discussing the broad principles of the law in force in India. Starting with a discussion on the meaning of ‘law’, how it comes into force, where it is in force, and how courts interpret its provisions, it goes on to talk about whom the law applies to and how the legal profession is formed and regulated. Subsequent chapters dwell upon constitutional and administrative law, our system of courts, the broad rules of civil and criminal procedure, the law of evidence, and the limitation of actions. Later chapters expound the laws of property, contracts, actionable wrongs (torts), trusts and corporations such as companies, co-operative societies and trade unions. This is followed by a discussion of personal law in the fields of marriage, divorce and adoption. Further, there are chapters on the laws of insolvency, transmission of property on death (succession), and the main features of general criminal law. The vast subject of regulatory laws (laws regulating monopolies), use of foreign exchange, and protecting the environment, to mention only a few, has also been briefly touched upon. A short discussion on tax and election laws completes the book. The application of the rules of law is illustrated by various judicial decisions. The book should be of interest to law students, students of other disciplines who want an overall view of Indian law, and any person who is interested in our laws or who has to deal with laws and courts.
